Days 5, 6 and 7

Long Delayed Day 5 - Five Pages!

I wasn't able to post these yesterday, they vanished into a queue for a moderator to approve them. Day before, the uploader just didn't work. Arrgh. Well, the post in the queue didn't show up so I'll post them again since it's working today!

These pages are part of my sketchbook for The Art House Coop's 2012 Sketchbook Project. It costs $25 to sign up and is still open till October 31 if you're interested. They'll send you a blank sketchbook that you can recover, rebind, draw, paint, collage, do whatever you want with it as long as you keep it within the same cover size and less than an inch thick. Then you have till January 31, 2012 to fill it. When signing up, you get to choose a theme from a menu. I could have had the soft option of "This is a Sketchbook" and done anything I wanted with it, but I picked "Prehistoric."

Then one more news article about creationists trying to throw evolution out of schools made me mad. Instead of just filling it with lots of prehistoric cats as I first planned, I decided to make it a cartoon history of life. So here it is. Evolution with a lot of pictures. Enjoy!

I was able to make one post but not to add another. This sucks. Is this a setting in the community? Can anyone get in and change this??? My Day 5 art still isn't visible!

Okay. I edited it into this post and changed the title. I'm getting really annoyed with this. I've got no problems posting to my own journal but some sort of ugly defaults are setting in on the community page. Do any of the official moderators still read this? Can you get in and reset the community so it's easier to post?

Hi Robert!

I'm no longer an official moderator - my old account allowed me to get into the controls and fix things. However, the official moderator seems to be MIA (deretla_skoob). I'm sorry! I'm thinking about creating a new community since this one is so old and out of date.

Ouch, that's what I was afraid of - that while we're livening it up, the original admins and moderators have wandered away.

it might work to create a new community even if I had to redo all my posts.

I just contacted Jenn and she is probably here now. I'm not a moderator so I can't help.

If we made a new LJ community then you'd have the access and could share it with those of us still active. I've been directing everyone to LJ anyway.

I'm having trouble posting to the "myartistdate" community also. It is probably an LJ community problem and not just this community.

You're having no problems posting to your own?

hmmm...

None at all with my regular journal. Only with the Artsomofo community. Yesterday it was my post "going to queue for moderator approval" and then a second try was "you have already reached the maxiumum number of posts for this community/ poster."

With one. That didn't even appear. Today I was able to post one post but I couldn't do the second, got reminded again of the One Post Limit that I know wasnt't there last year. I posted several times during a productive day sometimes.

I made another site. It seems from what people are saying that this LJ community and mine myartistdate have been broken into so people can't post.

The new one is on Wordpress. The person I think who broke into this is a former artsomofoer who has bragged to me in the past that it is easy to break into LJ accounts. That is why I am moving this to Wordpress

The problem with hosting it on Wordpress is that their Terms of Service would allow anyone to copy and use any Content for free, not even giving credit! I'm nervous about even posting thumbnails of my art on a site with that in the terms of service.

Blogger might be an alternative.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one having problem with posting and viewing, and it is great that you are all working on this. That being said, I don't want to miss the opportunity to say Robert, I LOVE what you have come up with so far!!!!!!!!! Great concept - creative response to an on going conflict!

Purr thank you!

Diana, I just got your email on the Wordpress thing. Please don't move artsomofo to Wordpress.

I read the Terms of Service and came across this line: By making Content available, you represent and warrant that:
the downloading, copying and use of the Content will not infringe the proprietary rights, including but not limited to the copyright, patent, trademark or trade secret rights, of any third party;

That means ANYONE can take my images, use them to sell their product or anything else, swipe my entire post and put it as Content on their blog. I'm pretty sure Wordpress did it to keep things simple so that their admins don't get overwhelmed with "my content got stolen" help desk requests.

But I'm very careful about terms of service because I've had art ripped off before. Couldn't we just set up a new LJ community?

Hi Robert, I have made a new community for this group. It's a very simple look.

http://artifest.livejournal.com

I'll just put your name on the list as a member so you can post immediately.

You will need to accept the invite from your email. I think I know who the trouble maker is since it was artsomofo and my myartistdate account that got hacked. I am going to be very careful who I accept into this community. There would be more than one person involved. This isn't the free ride that it once was.

It would be good to have Bob here.

I could open up a new Livejournal account for this community. Mikella and Jenn and I would like to change the name. I was thinking of Artsofest. The "...mofo" part of the name is actually swearing and I have never felt comfortable with it. Also I am changing the name so their is no claim over it should someone get antsy in the future.

You know Robert I just reread that part of the WP TOS and it sounds like it means that you agree that you aren't infringing on any one else's copyright by posting works. In other words that either the work is yours or you have permission to publish someone else's work. This phrase or ones like it are in all TOS.

But if you feel better I will make an LJ of this instead.

Let me know before I do that.

Thank you for making an LJ of it. I think they put that in so that if another community member reposted your post, you couldn't argue about it. So that they would save staff time investigating copyright issues against members. A lot of other statements were about not posting material from others without permission from the copyright holder, but the loophole I posted was so that if it did happen within the community they could say "Look, he's not out of line, you put your work out there and shared rights without asking for attribution. It's in the TOS."

The similar term I've seen elsewhere is that the company can specifically repost your content to advertise the company - it's a lot narrower. DeviantART has that version. But it's not a blanket permission for EVERYONE to repost it without attribution and DeviantART usually not only attributes but does so in a friendly, promotional way. They want people to join because cool good artists are there.

I guess I've had too many years of paying attention to contract demonology. If there's a loophole, someone will find and use it. I won't because it's not ethical (too many people don't read the TOS) but I could grab anyone's Wordpress photo as a photo reference to draw from without credit or permission.
